Affliction between Saturn and Uranus (continued)
The eccentric vibrations of this affliction hinder one’s grounding as well as one’s experience of the connection with others. By contrast, in the harmonious aspect, the overlap in consciousness between the personal and the collective can be experienced; here the Self is able to collect itself into a single point and turn itself towards the opposite side (23.3).
The forced attempts to separate oneself that the affliction evokes, can be harmful for the Self. This is why the separation fails again and again. It makes it difficult for the masculine Self to oppose himself. This aspect is characterized by extremes; apart from extreme feelings of superiority and being above the law, it also brings extreme fear.
In Andersen’s fairy tale ‘The Snow Queen’, this extremely chilly Self, and/or impending loss of Self, has been aptly portrayed. Both a strong bonding and an inability to connect can be the result.
- In afflictions between the Moon and Uranus, the intermediate phase with Saturn is skipped in the formation of the Self. The Moon-Self tends to a dispersing Self-projection. The affliction points to sudden and ill-timed rifts in one’s bonding with the mother. The formation of the Self is not hindered, but if the root is damaged, the Self gets alienated from its own soul field. This leads to a risk of dissociation. Excommunication or other forms of banishment may be experienced. In itself, this aspect does not indicate either a converging or dispersing Self, but a successful formation of the Self is marked by tension.
The personal Self overflows its banks and bursts. Excess is abused as a means of power. These explosions come unexpectedly, by fits and starts, like an electrical shock inverting the positive and negative poles. Either one’s own rotation or that of other Selves in one’s environment will be thrown off balance, or off plumb (= Saturn).
When the sealing of the circumference is broken up, the personal turbulences have a decentralizing and uprooting effect, both in the person and in his environment. The person is eccentric (ex-centric) or outside himself, slung away from his Center. The form gets overruled and possibly damaged. In case of a weak Saturn, after an outburst one often has lost one’s stable center. The position of Saturn is therefore of crucial importance for the net result of this aspect.
- In an aspect between Sun and Uranus, there is an enhanced self-awareness, which in case of affliction can lead to self-exaltation. The Self is eccentric and experiences itself as a class of its own. With this aspect, there can be an authoritarian attitude and an ill-concealed contempt for others, without spoiling one’s charisma. There is both nobility and haughtiness.
In affliction, the feelings of superiority can be coupled with a tendency to subjugate others. The inversion of traditional power relationships also falls under this conflictive aspect. In the harmonious version, it is more a matter of ‘noblesse oblige’, where the augmentation and exaltation become characteristics of the larger whole to which the person contributes.
It goes without saying that the formation of the Self is hindered by the dispersing tendency of this affliction.
- As the Sun does not constitute a boundary factor, he plays a subordinate role in the process of Self-formation. Consequently, the afflictions with the Sun are less significant. However, the Solar principle is the factor that everything else revolves around.
If this ‘flame-thrower’ is too weak or too strong, he is capable of ‘hiding his light under a bushel’ or, on the contrary, have a blinding effect. Therefore his influence should still be taken into account.
The environment
In case of aspects between one of these four planets and the Ascendant, the Self-developmental phase in question will be worked out in a stressed relationship with the environment, which may be doable or not.
The ruler of the Ascendant indicates the ability to be completely oneself under all circumstances. In case of affliction, the expression of this ability will be under pressure.
